Romeo & Juliet
Located at Tulsa Ballet Company's Kivisto Hall
About This Work
This life size sculpture was commissioned by the Tulsa Ballet to depict and honor their retiring Prima Ballerina. It is located at the entrance of the Kavisto Studio at the Tulsa Ballet offices in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was requested to portray the sculpture in the likeness of the particular ballerina being honored--But, with the proviso that I was not allowed to actually visit with, or directly photograph the subject! It was to be a surprise gift and my presence would spoil the surprise.
While I was greatly disappointed to never meet the subject of my efforts, I did visit many other ballerinas and absolutely fell in love with ballet. I think there is probably no other subject for a figurative sculpture that is more graceful or more athletic than a ballerina. Their grace, their balance, their movement and their beauty incorporate all of the elements that make a sculpture catch our attention. I have sense completed three additional ballerina sculptures.
